According to the United States Department of Health and Human Service the number of children in foster care in 2012 was 397,122. The number of children awaiting adoption as of September 30th were 101,666. Male children in foster care was 207,947 or 52%, and female children numbers showed 189,113 or 48% in care. The age of children ranged from less than one year old to age 20. The majority of children were between the ages of one year and five years old.
