Foster parents, as a general rule, are not paid. They are reimbursed for some of the expenses incurred in caring for the children placed in their care. Reimbursement (or stipend) amounts vary greatly by location and the child’s level or difficultly of care as determined by the placing agency. There are some foster homes who take children with severe medical or emotional/mental health/behavioral difficulties who get a higher stipend in order to compensate for the more intense care required and often the inability for at least one parent to work outside of the home.
