Judge Michael Nash has been a big proponent of adoptions. This week he helped finalize 200 adoptions in L.A., as reported by the L.A. Times. Sixteen years ago Judge Nash recognized the huge backlog of adoption cases which led to the development of “Adoption Saturdays.” On those Saturdays, held quarterly, adoption cases are expedited and families are legally created. Adoption Saturdays have brought about the finalization of 35,000 adoptions.
Judge Nash will retire at the end of this year.
Even with the joy of last week’s 200 adoptions, there is still great need. Nearly 1,600 of the 20,000 children in foster care in L.A. are eligible for adoption and are just waiting to be matched. The Alliance for Children’s Rights offers free legal services for those in the L.A. County adopting through foster care. They encourage all who are interested to contact L.A.’s DCFS to get started.
