The Harris Family
Joel and I met 15 years ago, on August 10th on the beach at Bear Lake, Idaho. We spent the whole night getting to know each other, talking on the beach until the sunrise. Then we dated long distance for almost two years before we got married.

My name is Syna, pronounced see-na. 33/Cambodian/Libra/Lover of books, fries and summer nights.

My sexy hubby is Joel. Mr. Athletic with secretly belts out broadway numbers in the car.

Our ridiculously cute, 3 year old son is named Mika, pronounced mee-ka. He is 1/2 Marshallese and 1/2 Samoan and has had a foot fetish since day one.

And we our lovable, giant, golden doodle named Cooper. Best dog ever and incredibly patient with Mika.

Together we are the Harris Family!

I am a licensed Cosmetologist. I do hair, eyelash extensions, make-up, waxing and sugaring. While doing all these services, some also consider me a therapist and a professional secret keeper. I’m in charge of booking my appointments which makes it really convenient as a mom. I’m also taking a few college classes online. Currently, on the sloooow track to eventually get my bachelor's degree. Joel build beautiful custom homes and also remodels existing homes. It’s a family affair, working with his dad and brothers. He is incredibly talented and is currently building our new house in Wellsville, Utah! We hope to be able to move in by the end of the year. Then we will have ample space for a new family member.

We were both born and raised in Tremonton, Utah. Coincidentally in the same hospital by the same doctor! We met at Bear Lake, spending the whole night getting to know each other, talking on the beach watching the sunrise. It was the ultimate meet cute. Then we dated long distance for almost two years before we tied the knot in 2009. Now we've been married 13 wonderful years! Crazy how fast time flies!

Joel is the most amazing husband and father. Mika and I are so lucky to have him in our lives. He is so thoughtful and selfless. Alway thinking of us first and doing everything he can to make us feel comfortable and loved. He’s a hard worker and takes the time to teach Mika new things. I can’t wait to see him father more children. Joel, Mika, and I have so much love to give!
Our Mika Boy!

Mika will be a great older brother!

Mika & Cooper

In 2019 we adopted our son, Mika. We met him at the hospital the day after he was born and our lives have changed forever since that precious day. Mika is wild and fearless! We have always been very active and adventurous and we are so happy that didn’t have to changed since becoming parents. Mika is always along for the ride and is the best little travel buddy. He has flown to Hawaii, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, California and Colorado. And has accompanied us on many road trips, as well as backing packing and camping trips.

He’s always willing and eager to try new things. He loves basically everything we love! Like boating, he’ll sit on Joel’s lap and ride the Ski Sky or surf with Joel. When tubing he loves to let go and yell, “No hands!” He cruises on his balance bike, there isn’t a hill that he’s won’t speed down. He’s tried zip lining and rock climbing. He is so physical and never runs out of energy! Anytime he hears music he is shaking his booty. Mika and I have many impromptu dance parties in the kitchen or anywhere else the mood strikes. He loves to wrestle and is constantly beating me up. But he gives the best hugs and kisses so I guess that makes up for it.

Mika only has one volume setting, which is LOUD. He’s very opinionated about what he wears. He is so social and is already such a lady’s man! He likes to tell us about his many girlfriends. He has become quite the story teller and is constantly making us laugh. He loves when I read to him and has quite a few books memorized and will “read” along with me. He is so smart, knowing how to spell his name and is crazy good with directions. Sometimes I will speak to him in Cambodian and Joel will speak to him in Samoan and it’s impressive how much he understands. I’m constantly in aw of all the new things he learns and does daily. We are so fortunate to get to be his parents!

Parenthood has been the most rewarding and challenging thing we have done in our lives. When Mika was only three months he was got Botulism from the air. It was terrifying and we almost lost him a few different times. He was completely paralyzed and spent 67 days in the hospital dependent on breathing and feeding tubes. With these health scares along with our fertility struggles I feel like our family has proven that we are fighters. We can preserve do hard things. And we have grown closer and strong throughout each trail.
What you can expect from us...

We will make sure your child knows how much you love them and how hard you worked to find them the right family.

Hope you like our Haiku ;)
Adoption isn’t easy. But we are willing to take on the challenge again because we have been so blessed by it. We are and will be forever thankful for Mika’s birth mom and have so much love for her. We are open and honest with Mika about adoption. The level of what we tell him will evolve as he gets older right now we simply show him pictures of his birth mother and tell him how he was in her belly. We only talk about her in a respectful light. We will do the same and make sure your child knows how much you love them and how hard you worked to find them the right family.

We have an open adoption. Our level of contact is completely on her terms. From the beginning we told her that our relationship will be whatever she is comfortable with. We know every adoption is different. But we intend to make the same promise to the next person or couple who decides to place their child with us, whatever type of relationship you want, we will honor. Thank you for taking the time to look into our family and thank you for considering an adoption plan for your child. We would love to meet so we can learn even more about each other! God bless you on your journey!

In conclusion I will leave you with a Haiku…

Hello! I am Syna’s cousin Jenna. I have known Joel since I was a little girl. These two have been a huge part of my life and I have always looked up to them as role models. I love how adventurous and brave they both are. They are such loving people and are amazing parents to my nephew Mika. They have always treated me with kindness growing up and I know that Mika and their future children will grow up to be amazing and kind people just like them. We have such a fun family who have so much love for one another. No one ever feels left out. Joel and Syna want nothing more than to find their missing puzzle piece to make their family whole and we would be so excited to welcome a new member into our big family.

I have known Joel for over 18 years, and Syna for more than 14. It’s hard to express how much I love and adore them as individuals, as a couple, and as parents. They work hard and play harder! They are the best parents to little Mika. We have been to so many family events together over the years! I have watched them in their home and on vacation, and I can’t think of a more fun and genuine couple. Love, love, love them!

You can't find better parents than Joel and Syna. They have been the best aunt and uncle to my kids, and now amazing parents to Mika. They are absolutely responsible, and will love your child unconditionally. As Mika has gone through all of his health challenges, I have seen their willingness to sacrifice everything for his well being. Mika is a fun, energetic boy, and will be a wonderful older brother. Your child will grow up in a loving home, and will have the life you hope for them to have.

I have known Syna all her life (she is my youngest sister). I can honestly say that your child will grow up in the most wonderful and loving home. Not only will their home be loving but their extended family is also just as caring and loving. I can attest to both sides. Joel's side is just as wonderful as our side. They will grow up in a fun and adventurous environment that will also give them opportunities to learn and grow. Joel and Syna are probably one of the kindest, down to earth, fun couples I know. They remind me of Chip and Joanna Gaines! Your child will also grow up in a very cultured home. We are Cambodian and are strongly connected to those Cambodian roots. Joel served his mission in Samoa and still loves and admires that culture as well. I do not have children of my own but I have seen these two around our nephews and they are wonderful with them. They are playful and loving with them. Also the young men and women in their church love to be around these two. I know that these two will make wonderful parents. I hope that you strongly consider them on your search.

Joel and Syna have a great marriage and love to be together. We have been on camping trips with them and they are so fun to be around. They spend a lot of time together and complement each other really well. Joel and Syna are absolutely stable in every way to care for children. They will be such amazing parents. They are spiritual people and put church and family first. They are very reliable. We get together with Joel and Syna pretty much once a week and have been on some awesome trips together. We have been on some pretty intense canyoneering trips with them and both of them stay calm throughout the canyons and give encouragement to all involved. We have also seen them struggle with infertility and they have always remained positive. They always talk about when they have kids and they are so optimistic about the future. Both Joel and Syna have so much fun with our kids. They are so good to actually get on the floor and play games with our kids each week. They always have fun with the kids but they also know when it is time to be serious and they have had to discipline our kids as well to make sure they don’t get hurt. I have left my kids with Syna during baseball games and they always have a great time and stay safe. They will be amazing parents and the children will be lucky to have them as parents!

We have known Joel and Syna Harris for more than four years now. Having met through church and now as dear friends, we have watched first hand their dedication to the Lord and their service to the youth. They give countless hours, planning and executing activities that will engage and include each child. They reach out to be sure each one feels welcomed and loved. Working with youth ages 12-18 can be stressful, but we’ve watched Joel and Syna handle the complaints and stress with grace. They are determined and won’t give up. They truly love the youth they serve and it shows. In turn, the youth love and look up to them. They’ve spent hours with our own children and have always treated them with love and respect. They spend extra time with them. They truly listen to them and treat them as though what they are saying is so important. They laugh and giggle with our younger children and mentor our older children. My children look up to them both. They would put the needs of a child first. They know how to say no, but would do so in a loving manner. They will be amazing parents! Their home is clean and welcoming. It’s also a home of service. Whether it is a neighbor with a broken fence or downed trees, or hosting a garage sale as a fundraiser for the youth of our church, they are always willing. A child in their home couldn’t help but feel completely loved and will be taught through example how to love and serve others in return. As a couple, they are a true partnership. We’ve witnessed them planning together for vacations or for ways to serve others. Each is willing to listen and compromise. They both love their extended families and encourage each other in supporting and serving their families. Having a child come to them would be absolutely wonderful! They have been looking forward to becoming parents for years. The child would be wholeheartedly loved. Their home is full of sunshine and laughter already, a child would only brighten it. He or she would be so blessed to have Joel and Syna as parents. Sincerely, Bryan and Brenda Arnell

Joel and Syna Harris have a close and happy marriage. They do almost everything together, including annual anniversary trips. They like the outdoors and do lots of hiking, climbing, etc. I have never heard either one say anything bad about the other. You can tell they really like being together. They are both very talented in their respective careers and work hard. Syna is very friendly and can talk comfortably with anyone. She accepts people for who they are. Joel is very loyal to his family and is easy to talk to. He makes you feel good about yourself when you're around him. Joel and Syna relate to children very well. They both volunteer with youth groups. They know all the kids' names. They speak to them respectfully and as equals. When we were contemplating a couple of days out of town, they were the first people we thought of when talking about who we'd be comfortable with staying with our kids. Overall, Joel and Syna are wonderful people. They live with integrity. They are cheerful and kind and will be amazing parents!

Adoption video 2.0

Like I said in this video, you guys are already probably sick of our last video that has been going around so I thought I would make a new one. This one is a little more silly and shows what huge dorks we really are! This adoption process is an emotional rollercoaster so it's nice to still be able to laugh at yourself! :)

About Joel written by Syna

Joel is the best thing in my life! He is so patient, loving, and incredibly selfless. He'll be pretty embarrassed about me gushing over him, so you should tease him about what a softy he really is!  ;)  He wakes me up every morning with a kiss and makes sure I have enough blankets. On the weekend, he makes me breakfast on top of our normal morning routine. Joel always goes out of his way to make sure I’m comfortable in any situation. I know he will do the same for his future children.

Joel does new home construction and remodeling with his dad and brothers. It's pretty amazing that he works with his family all week long and then they still wants to hang out on the weekends. They build beautiful homes and take pride in their work. One of the first things I was attracted to (other than his good looks of course) were Joel's rough hands. I knew right away that he was strong and a hard worker, which is still true today. He is always helping my parents out on their home as well. He remodeled their main floor and put in new flooring without expecting anything in return.

He has such a great work ethic but is still so fun and makes me laugh all the time. He's really silly, always busting out awkward dance moves and cracking jokes. Lately he's been working on his hand stands to beat one of the neighbor girls on who can do one the longest. It’s so funny to watch him walk on his hands around our kitchen island while Cooper tries to nip at his feet. Those two wrestle and play the second he gets home from work and it's pretty dang cute.

Joel's up for anything and will eat everything. You would be amazed to see how much ice cream he eats regularly. We already mentioned previously our love for the outdoors. Indoors he loves to play ping-pong. He's a big fan of BYU football and Jazz basketball. Joel gets pretty fired up while watching any sporting event while I usually read next to him, trying to ignore him yelling at the screen. At night to relax he likes to watch whatever show we have recorded or are currently binging on Netflix but hardly ever stays awake for a full episode.

Joel is very athletic and has a passion for sports. He played football, soccer and wrestled when he was younger and now plays softball on a city team.  I remember when we lived in Salt Lake, Joel played on an all Polynesian Rugby team, making him really easy to spot which was helpful because I hadn't a clue what was going on. Your child will have the opportunity to try all types of spots and have their dad helping them along the way. Joel enjoys playing catch with his nephews and would love a child of his own to do so with.

His testimony inspires me to be better, he is always serving the Lord and his fellow men. He served a two year mission in Samoa where he grew to love the people there. It was one of the hardest and most rewarding thing he has ever done and I know it has played a big role in making him the man he is today. We recently had a chance to go back and it was a trip of a lifetime. It was so touching to see the long term effects Joel had on some people we reconnected with. The people there are so happy and loving and we hope to go back one day but next time with kids in tow.

Joel is very social and gets along with anyone he meets. He's easy to talk to and easy going. Joel is so great with kids. He is a hands on uncle and loves his nieces and nephews very much. I know he will be such a great dad. I can’t wait to see him step into that role!

About Syna written by Joel

My life has changed for the better since I met Syna. The first thing that caught my eye, other than her drop dead good looks, was her super unique personality. She was friendly and social with everyone. Even me, who she had never met before in her life! That whole night I was trying to think of ways I could be close to her and get to know her better. Not much has changed since that night! Syna is still the same fun, loving, and energetic girl now that she was then and she is everything to me!!

When Syna and I first started dating we had so much fun together! I was surprised after a couple weeks that she was still interested in me! When we weren't together on a date or just hanging out we were talking or texting on the phone. We were pretty much completely involved with each other’s lives every hour of every day and I loved it!! I had never felt this way about anyone and was excited each day by what new things I would learn about her!

I learned early on that Syna is Cambodian and very proud of it. I loved that she took so much pride in her culture and ethnicity. I loved Syna's parents from the moment I met them! The first time I went to Syna's parents house Syna's mom said I could come over and watch a movie if I stopped at the store and picked up a gallon of milk!! I was very entertained by this and told her I would be happy to! All of Syna's family members are warm and kind and we love being together for parties, we especially love doing karaoke together!!

Syna and I have been married 8 and a half years now and its been a fun ride! Syna has turned into quite the adventure buddy! When we first met I think she had gone camping a couple times with some friends and I hoped that was going to change. Syna knew then that I loved the outdoors and that I wanted us to enjoy them together. One of the first things we did when we got married was invested in climbing gear. Living in Nibley we are so close to many canyons that have endless amounts of climbing walls. Syna is a natural at climbing! She is fearless and puts all her trust in me when we climb together!  We can't wait to take our kids climbing with us someday and hope that they develop the same love for adventure sports as we have! We also love backpacking together. The first time I took Syna backpacking I was pretty nervous, but she was super tough and had a great time! Syna is not a quitter, and although it wasn't easy for her she finished strong and we have been many times since then! I love her spirit of adventure!!

Syna is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met! She is so understanding of all types of situations that people find themselves in. If any of her friends ever need advice they call her. She will always take the time to talk to them and help them in any way that she can! I can remember a time when Syna got a call late at night from a friend who had had a rough night and had been ditched by some friends and needed help. This happened in the middle of the night and Syna went right away and picked her up and took her back to our place to sleep for the night. The next morning Syna fed her friend and then spent a few hours just listening to her friend vent. Thats all she needed at that time and Syna has offered that same attention to others that she is close to!  I know that any time I have a problem or concern that I can talk to her and she always calms me down. Syna is the best listener!

She loves everyone she comes in contact with and makes everyone feel comfortable in any situation!  I also watch the way she works with the youth in our church and those girls love and respect her and it’s because she shows that same love and respect to them! She is going to be a wonderful mother someday, hopefully sooner than later!!

Syna has a very entrepreneurial spirit and I love this about her! When we started looking in to buying a home she already knew that she wanted her own home salon. I thought this was an awesome idea! Syna has been working there now for nearly 4 years! She loves her clients and they love her!! She also does videography on the side. The most recent business venture has been a hat company. She started to help her parents out financially. She is great at getting online and finding classes she can take that teach her to do all these things. She is extremely talented and loves making people feel good about themselves! I love it because I have the best hairstylist in Cache Valley in my home all the time and she's never too busy to take care of my hair!!

One of my favorite things to see is Syna interacting with our nieces and nephews!! She loves each of them so much and spends time getting to know them individually!  Syna on multiple occasions has had sleepovers with them on one condition that they are out of pull ups! This has been a great motivator for certain nieces and nephews and we enjoy having them at our house! Syna is about the only adult in the family that can match the energy levels of these kids! She will play with them for hours and hours and never act bothered or irritated! I think I already mentioned that she is going to be an awesome mother but I will mention it again!!! She absolutely loves kids and will do anything for them! She always looks for opportunities to get together and do something fun with the nieces and nephews! Earlier this year Syna saw that Beauty and the Beast was coming to a local theatre so she asked which nieces wanted to go and planned a fun night out with the girls!

Syna is the best wife I could have ever asked for! She shows complete devotion to me and I know that she is always there for me no matter what!  She is completely devoted to her religion as well! Each Sunday we walk together across the street to the church house and enjoy worshipping there. We are excited to take our future children with us someday and hope they will have that same devotion to the Lord! I know that Syna's testimony of the things she believes is going to bless the lives of our children and will be influential in their growing up to be awesome citizens in society!

I hope this little bit that I have written about Syna helps you to understand what a wonderful person she is! I can't wait to see her as a mom! If the things I have seen her succeed in are any indicator of the type of mother she is going to be then your child will be in the best hands!  She has so much love to give and wants more than anything to give it to your child!!
