Brielle was born post-dates in June 2015 from an unmonitored pregnancy. She has been diagnosed with craniosynostosis, for which she has had two corrective surgeries, symptomatic epilepsy (controlled via medication), congenital heart defects (small foramen ovale, moderate pulmonary valve stenosis), left-sided kidney agenesis with compensatory hypertrophy of the right kidney, mild cognitive delay, tall stature, and dysmorphic facial features. A genetic syndrome, such as microdeletion 3q13.31, is suspected. Genetic testing results are currently pending.
UPDATE JAN 2018: Our in-country representative who recently visited Brielle found her to be a sweet, active, inquisitive child who follows simple instructions and loves receiving hugs from familiar adults. Though not yet verbal Brielle expresses her desires and emotions through gestures and imitation. While her foster family is taking good care of her medically they have been unable to adequately address her fine motor and speech delays. Brielle deserves to be a beloved daughter in a forever family that can provide her with nurture and structure as well as the resources and therapies she needs to flourish.
2017: Brielle is a calm, cheerful little girl who frequently smiles when engaging with others. She sits, crawls, and walks independently with some instability. She reaches for and grasps toys, transfers them from hand to hand, and shows good overall hand-eye-mouth coordination. Brielle turns pages in books, builds with blocks, works on puzzles with the help of an adult, and puts her toys away when she is finished playing. She especially likes musical toys with buttons and lights. Her attention span is age-appropriate.
Brielle reacts to her name and responds appropriately to praise and reprimand. She is not able to express her wants and needs verbally, but vocalizes when talked to by an adult, mainly using one syllable combinations. Brielle can play independently for long periods of time but also seeks out and enjoys interacting with other children and with adults. She expresses joy upon seeing familiar faces and has formed a clear emotional bond with her foster family.
Brielle drinks from a cup, is learning to feed herself with a spoon, and enjoys baths. She is not yet toilet-trained. Brielle is enrolled in an Early Intervention program.
